halter dresses: made by you!
August 5, 2010 The very best part of making patterns is being surprised by all of the lovely, creative works that come from it. I love it when I see something unexpected, whether it be a unique fabric combination, an embellishment, or just that little extra something that really makes the garment POP!, that makes it no longer my pattern, but your vision, come to life.
I wanted to share with you some of works that I've enjoyed seeing pop up in the flickr pool, focusing on one of my favorite summertime patterns, the Halter Dress. Check them out:

Does it get any sweeter than wolfjes' polka dots paired with polka dots?! I think not!

Stofjes & lapjes blogged about her dress here, using a Spoonflower fabric. Please check out the rest of her lovely work, so many inspiring creations!

I've been following Polkadotjes' blog for a while, and was so thrilled to see her version of the halter dress. Those blues! And that wallpaper! Sigh.

I definitely plan on my daughters rocking this look by Needle Work as the weather starts to cool down. The halter dress with a classic little cardigan and mary jane's? That screams Autumn perfection to me...
Which reminds me... my Apple is about to start kindergarten. Which means she'll need a back to school wardrobe. The thought of putting together a school wardrobe for my big girl is both exhilarating and daunting at the same time. She mostly wears dresses. But I wonder if that will be practical enough for the play yard? What are your favorite back-to-school sewing patterns or looks? I do have a few ideas, but would love to hear your thoughts! I'd like for her wardrobe to remain mostly handmade, as it is now.
Happy Thursday, Friends!

I hope to have my version of the halter dress completed in the next few days. Sleeping Beauty by HR and some solid for the bottom as IMO it just too much print for this dress in a size 6. We shall see. Im nervous AND excited to finally try this pattern.
Im guessing your raglan dress is the PERFECT preschool dress paired with leggings from anywhere like gap or childrens place or target for around $4 I dont think you can go wrong. Cardigans a must! and perhaps using some of your stash 1/2 yards make a bunch of super simple skirts that take around 15 mins to whip up so she can wear those with some solid tops from ON kids. Thats my thoughts anyway. You can always worry abt fall and winter when they come LOL. I still think the pants u made apple a few years back were amazing so perhaps even a few pairs of pants? Sometimes its nice to go through the fabrics you have and see what you can get rid of = free clothes for apple. This last month I have made 4 sets of HR slippers and a baby kimono all using what I had. I just keep sorting through for ideas. Dont forget if you buy fabric from Joannes you can use HOBBY LOBBY and JOANNES printable online coupons for 40% off each piece of cut fabric. So perhaps even mix some plain konnas from Joannes with the lovely stuff you have. My thoughts for the day LOL
another comment from me.. :o)
I LOVE polkadojes log. Any chance you KNOW the red riding head fabric she used OR the skirt pattern? I ADORE it!
Another idea.. I like to use miniboden.com for ideas on clothing.. things to make etc. I love that they make simple tees and dresses from cotton jersey and sew a huge simple flower that makes it POP!
Karla~ Thanks for the outfit ideas! I'm going to check a few of those out! I looked at polkadotjes' blog, I have no clue what the red riding hood fabric was, but surely cute, right? if you look on the left sidebar you can translate to english (although the translation is a bit rough, it's pretty understandable). I believe she drafted the pattern herself after one of her daughters favorite skirts.
Oh wow, how super that you like Janne's Halter dress and follow the 'polkadotjes'blog!
Whenever she wears the dress, she gets a lot of 'wow's. But I love all versions of the dress I saw so far...how can any of those dresses not be a succes, with such a super pattern. The halterdress will be made many, many times in the future.
Karla, thank you for your enthousiasm. The red riding head fabric is from Kokka (Push Pin/ November Books / Little Red Riding Hood / color mint). If you google, you will definitely find the fabric in one of the online shops (Fabricworm, Etsy,...), e.g.:http://www.fabricworm.com/konoboliredr1.html
The pattern is indeed a copy of one of Stien's favourite skirts. I only have the pattern in size 8 years since I have absolutely no knowledge (yet) about adjusting patterns.
And I just love your last pattern: there are just not enough hours in a day for all my plans.
Nice dresses! I like that polka dots halter. Looks so beautiful. I would like to have made for my little niece.
